Thoughts

I haven't been posting anything lately. It's been shit busy at work, half of the normal crew is on holidays and the lady who was supposed to cover for the holidays decided to resign after the first week with us. Another thing is that I want to meet my friends and walk around the city while I am still here, because the last week here starts today. My mood is a bit melancholic, even though a part of me already welcomes and misses a change. New adventures are about to begin. Slowly but surely I've been planning my trip around Asia. In Vietnam I'd like to go on a cruise on Mekong River, in Singapore there is a Haw Par Villa Park, introducing Chinese folklore and mythology. I absolutely want to go there.
I will miss the city
Here in Sydney I have been planning to visit Sydney Tower but never made it as far as actually booking the ticket. So, if, fr example, there is a Bangkok Tower, I will probably go there. Actually it is nice that I didn't hurry and do everything here in Sydney, now there are so many things to look forward to doing in Asia. And in Asia all those experiences cost a fraction of their price in Australia. OK, now I will need to get ready for lunch. I try to write a bit more later on.

On the other hand, I will not miss these prices

Ajatuksia

Mieliala on hieman haikea, vaikka tavallaan muutosta kaipaankin jo, on silti vaikeaa jättää kaikki tutut kuviot taakseen ja jälleen kerran suunnata kohti uusia seikkailuja.

How I lost my sense of humor

I've been in Australia for 11 months now and this year has without any doubt been the most interesting year of my life. I've learned a lot about people but even more about myself. I'm more understanding towards other people after seeing many different lifestyles, many different problems. On the other hand I've met selfish, disgusting and unworthy people and I am more cynical and hate people more than ever. Living in a hostel can get very tiring from time to time and sometimes I feel so tired having people around me all the time that I would just like to be mean to everyone, on purpose. It would be nice to be able to say that this trait only surfaces when I'm unwell but unfortunately the fact is that I was born mean and ill-spirited and since teenage years have made reasonable effort to hide my true character. I'm not even that unwell anymore. The sick eye is almost normal but I'm still mean.

Anna will leave Sydney next week and to my utter horror I noticed that she is effectively my only friend in Sydney. In all these 6 months I've been here I haven't been able to make one single friend here. I have another friend here, yes, but I already knew her in Finland, so I have badly failed the mission of making new friends. When it comes to friends I've always thought that quality beats quantity any day but in this kind of situations my principle fails a bit. Actually I noticed that throughout my life I've usually had one, maximum two, good friends with whom I spend most of my time. Now it seems like I will spend a solitary, quiet month in the hostel without anyone to talk to after work. At the same time I feel like that my interest towards meeting people is zero. I'm tired of having people around me all the time and I'm so not going to invest my precious time here trying to make new friends who are most likely only going to stay in my life for the short period of time I still have left in Sydney. Luckily I have my trip to Asia to plan, that will keep my mind occupied. I've already booked my flight to Vietnam, that'll be 29 of April. I'll stay in Saigon for around one week and then probably head to Singapore, Malaysia and finally end up in Bangkok where I will catch my flight to Helsinki. I decided to pay extra for comfort and booked a slightly more expensive direct flight to Finland. Plus, it's Finnair and I can be sure the service is good.

A week ago I told my boss I will be leaving in the end of April. It made me kind of happy that my co-workers seemed to be genuinely sorry that I'll leave. Many of them asked if I could extend my visa but that's not possible. I'm sad to leave my job, too. First time in a couple of years I have a job I actually love. Now someone might think it's not normal to love ironing but I do. Besides, my job has been the only normal thing in my life during my stay in Sydney, the only place not full of backpackers, the only place where life is not full of booze and parties. I've always been somewhat against that kind of lifestyle and here I'm more sure than ever that I made the right choice, saying no to alcohol and parties. What's the point to go to the other end of the world if you'll just go there to drink beer? That can be accomplished at home too, and at a lower cost.

I'd like to spend the summer in Finland, doing some simple summer job and try to find my sense of humor that I seem to have lost during my travels. Then when the autumn comes, I'd like to head back to some warm, nice location without the risk of snow and frost. If anyone knows a place where they need a motivated summer help, let me know :)

Kuinka menetin huumorintajuni

My year abroad

It feels unreal, soon it's one year since I came to Australia. Last week I booked my flight from Bangkok to Helsinki and looked back at my time here. How does it feel like to be going back to Europe? This is bad news to those who might be waiting for my return, but I don't feel positive about going back. Yes, I miss many things from Finland but when I think about the actual, day to day life in that grey, rainy and cold piece of land in the north, I feel extremely depressed. It's been a rainy month in Sydney and it reminds me of Finland and not in a nice way either. Everyone has an equal right to Sun and I'd like to live in a place where I can see more of it, somewhere where winter only exists in the dictionary. It's nice to visit Finland but it's also nice to have a one-way ticket out of the country.
The plant in our bathroom disappeared one day
I realized that at some level I don't have a home country anymore. I have been living abroad for several years now, like half of my adult life. In my heart I will always remain a Finn but I feel as foreign in Finland as anywhere else. I look the same as everyone else and speak the same language but I don't feel like I belong there anymore. Even in Australia I look like I belong here and speak the same language but I'm just visiting. Some time ago I read an article in a newspaper and learned that many people who live abroad at some point of their life sort of lose the feeling of having a home country. The original home country was described ”the passport country”. I can totally relate to this feeling. Finland is my passport country but I have many places I can call home. I belong everywhere and nowhere.

The year in Australia hasn't been anything I was anticipating when I first arrived here. It's been a year full of laughter, crying, sadness, happiness, joy, anger, all kind of emotions. We weren't able to do much of independent travel due to limited budget, so we had to go to places where we could find some volunteer work. This was a great way of learning about Australia but in a way it wasn't exactly what we set out for. We were running out of funds when we staggered to Sydney and happened upon fresh job opportunities. I found the best job I have had in a couple of years but then run into other kind of unhappiness and problems and now when finally I feel like all those problems are more or less behind me I notice it's time to pack-a my back and return to the start. Since the end of September I have been creating my own sort of reality in a city on the other side of the world and now I have to give up the spot I have build for myself and start from the beginning again. And all that in a country I don't necessarily like that much and don't want to stay in. I feel sad.
My place in the world, the bottom bed
During this year I have experienced more than ever before or maybe it just feels that way because everything has happened in such a short time. I will miss the exciting backpacker life that's full of opportunities. You never know what's around the corner, you just have to go and see. Luckily I will spend three weeks traveling in Asia before going back to boring Finland. At least there is something to look forward to.
Our room- home sweet home
All in all, I guess I will never find happiness. I don't possess a happy gene, I'm too demanding. I definitely need to have a lot to be happy. I came here to learn to enjoy the moment, to be happy with what I have but it seems like I have to repeat the lesson.

Vuosi ulkomailla

Mieliala on vähän surkea.
Siinä se on, mun paikka maailmassa. Tuo alapeti

The shit eye story

Some years ago one of my friends got a really nasty infection in her eye lid. Me and the other girl living together with her amused ourselves by speaking in idioms that included ”eye” in one form or the other. Later on I had a reason to regret such a mean approach when I experienced the delights of infected eye lid on my vacation in Italy.

On Saturday I felt an infection approaching my eye as it started to act up in a strange way, so I ran to the nearest health center in order to obtain a batch of prescription only antibiotic eye drops. The doctor was a bit skeptic about my diagnosis. ”Are you quite sure it's an infection? Maybe you just got something in your eye?” A couple of hours later I found myself sitting in the waiting room of eye hospital's emergency room. I wanted to ask if the doctor was quite sure he was a doctor. The eye went red and swollen, resembling a rotten tomato more than anything. Personnel in the emergency room kept asking me how the eye came to be that way. Well, that's exactly the thing I wanted them to tell me. They said it was an allergic reaction to something and send me home with a new prescription for all kind of eye drops. My eye was poked, and the lid was rolled on a cotton swab. They said I was more calm during the process than the typical patient.

Because Sydney is such a small, unimportant village on the edge of the world, I could not find an extended hours pharmacy anywhere in the midnight. Feeling totally fucked I crawled to home and went on instilling the eye drops I already got. I had asked the receptionist at the eye emergency if she knew about a 24 hours pharmacy but she just shrugged the question off as stupid. No pharmacy, go home and die.

So I waited until the pharmacy nearby opened its doors and dashed in to finally get the medicine. I had been prescribed antihistamine to calm the allergic reaction but the pharmacist told me the dose was odd. Usually the medicine was to be taken once a day, even twice a day would be an unusually high dose. My dose was three times I day. I decided against poisoning myself with antihistamine and kept to the dose suggested at the pharmacy.

This morning I went to the eye hospital for a check up. On the way there I happened to notice there was a pharmacy just opposite of the emergency room reception. So the lady sits there staring at the pharmacy every day but doesn't notice it's there. As we say in Finland, take the eye ball in your hand and take a proper look. Well, anyway I had my appointment only one hour late and asked the new doctor to prescribe more of FML eye drops.
”Did you throw away the bottle?”
”No, I ran out of the stuff.”
”How's that possible, it's supposed to last for one month?”
”I was told to instill 15 drops 4 times a day.”
”WHAT? The eye can only take one drop. There has been a misunderstanding somewhere.. it's very confusing. Well, I'll just give you a new prescription so you can buy a new bottle.”

No wonder the skin feels too tight around the eye, the steroid drops overdose probably made the facial muscles develop overnight and the right sight of my face will be permanently bigger than the left side. Once again I started wondering who you can actually trust in this world. Apparently in Australia being in the possession of a stethoscope is enough to guarantee a position as a doctor. Anyway today's doctor seemed quite reliable. He seemed an introvert kind of person, probably actually studied in the uni instead of just going to the faculty parties.

Oh yes, the most annoying thin in the Saturday night was a guy who commented on my dark glasses. ”Is the night too bright for you?” I felt like removing the sunglasses and giving him the evil eye. Why do they have to comment on everything? And even more annoyed was I by the fact that even declaring out loud I have a contagious infection in the eye did not make the new, less-wanted roommates pack their stuff and move out. If I came to a room where someone needs to be so incognito that she even sleeps wearing sunglasses and has a nagging cough that sounds like the good, old-fashioned consumption, I would have removed my person from the situation ASAP. But some people don't care.

Marijuana dealer came and other unhappy incidents

Last weekend we woke up to the beautiful sound of the fire alarm again. Practice really makes perfect and this time our room was not the last to evacuate. We rose quickly and woke up our roommates who slept through the alarm. The atmosphere was relaxed and I even tried to locate my cardigan, not wanting to go anywhere without it.

It was a false alarm once again. A marijuana dealer had visited us in hopes of lucrative business in the backpacker community. However, no business contacts were established and frustrated by this turn of events the guy put the fire alarm on on his way out. I have no explanation as to why no one was interested in his merchandise. I wouldn't say no one uses that stuff here. Anyway, after the alarm it was very difficult to get back to sleep. Luckily that's not something that rarely happens here. There is always someone coming in or going out and the noise of the opening and closing door is enough to keep me awake most nights.

On Monday the boiler broke at work. We went home early because there was nothing we could do without steam. The problems continued well into Wednesday and we did 10 hour days, trying to manage all the orders. There is still a chaos waiting for us on Monday, though. It's kind of depressing to think that it will probably take at least another week to clear the mess.

But Mondays are also somewhat good now because that's when I go to the language school to study Vietnamese. It really gave me a surprise to notice how ill prepared people are to study a foreign language. I mean, in Finland every pupil/student has to study at least two foreign languages, English and Swedish/Finnish (depending on your mother tongue). In addition to those mandatory languages many people I know have also studied German, Russian, French, Spanish etc. Even the days of my grandparents there was interest in the study of languages. So, we learn how to study a language quite early in life and later on, for many it is already a routine. Not here, no. Everyone participating in the course is grown up alright, but their ability to build even a simple sentence, such as ”my names is x” is close to zero. They try to learn every sentence by heart without trying to understand the actual meaning of the individual words. Too bad it's impossible to learn by heart every sentence of a language. It would be far easier to just memorize the words and understand the basic grammar but but.. So if asking someone's name poses such a difficulty, what's going to happen when we (hopefully) move on to the more complicated stuff? I'm starting to be afraid we'll be stuck asking the name and nationality for the entire duration of the course. That sucks.

And finally, there was some humor to be found this week, too. It seems like clothes with ready made holes are fashinable now. I'm sure they'll sell well in Australia, the country of people who constantly complain about not having any money. What could be better than looking like a beggar and paying a couple of hundred of dollars for the look? Seriously, this is probably one of the richest, highest earning countries on the Earth but it's cool to pretend you are poor. Get real.

Maanantaissa on kuitenkin jotain hyvääkin, koska silloin käyn vietnamin kurssilla. Eli siis opimme jo melko nuorena opiskelemaan kieliä. Monet tuttuni ovat tämän lisäksi opiskelleet koulussa saksaa, venäjää, espanjaa, ranskaa tai muuta vastaavaa täysin vapaaehtoisesti. Olin kurssilla yllättynyt siitä, miten huonot valmiudet paikallisilla aikuisilla ihmisillä on opiskella vierasta kieltä. Aivan peruslauseiden tuottaminen on heille lähes mahdotonta.

Much stress about nothing

Today the blog writer is not well on this beautiful Sunday in the exotic city of Sydney, suffering from a headache caused by tension neck and feeling entitled to feel cranky and miserable. She just wants to stay in the bed she shares with the bedbugs (nasty beasts, I'm full of bite marks and consequent bruises cause by scratching the itchy bite marks. Not cool, man!) I've had a headache since Wednesday and it reminded me of how I used to be scared of having a headache. In my family we have the gene of having intracranial hemorrhage (fancy name for the bursting of a vessel inside your head) and I was scared I'd die of it as so many people before me. I was so stressed about it that for three years the thought occupied my mind almost every day. What a waste of time to worry about something that might never happen!

Remembering this led me to write about stressing about many things and how different people see stressful situations. The writer herself confesses to be prone to stress pretty much about everything. There isn't such a small matter that it wouldn't create a stress reaction in me because I'm the master of making a mountain out of a mole hill. I stress about being late, sleeping, eating healthy food (I don't eat healthy anymore, being too tired to cook I've started eating a lot of junk food), well, everything. I'm the exact opposite of most of my roommates who seem to take life as it comes, day by day. So let me introduce some of our differences.

Enormous stress attack, one piece is missing!

1. Eating and drinking

I try to eat healthy, I really try. I always try to make filling, nutritious meals and avoid eating too much sugar and fat. It horrifies me to see that e.g. Italians I've met here ate chocolate cookies for breakfast and drank a couple of glasses of wine almost every day. Unfortunately I've comfortably started to slip to this kind of ”eating sweets and drinking wine”- cuisine. Maybe enjoying life keeps Italians healthy and increases longevity but in my case the effect is the opposite cause I stress about not eating according to generally accepted guidelines.

You can start drinking wine in the afternoon. Once I asked my Argentinian roommates if they think it is appropriate to drink wine in the afternoon. The answer was ”what is time?” I had to go and lie down for the rest of the afternoon and think, because this scattered my worldview. Yes, what is time? Does it really matter if you drink wine at lunch? Some people are drunk as a skunk at eight o'clock in the morning.

2. The power of ”together”

Face it, Finnish culture is quite discriminating. We form groups with people we like, and only with those people. The ones who do not fit in the group are left outside without a second glance. Maybe it is living this backpacker hostel that makes people more open, but it is also a fact that some cultures are more collective than the others. When our Italian and Argentinian roommates go somewhere, they automatically ask everyone who seems to need some company to come along. It's not so important to be the very best friends with everyone, or get along like a house on fire. It's important to do things together, spend time together. Once I went to the beach with my Argentinian roommates and they wanted to play beach volley. I didn't want to play because I seriously suck at every sport possible except maybe yoga (if that counts as a sport). My roommates said they don't care if I'm good or not, that's not the point. I sa the rest of the afternoon on the beach, feeling disturbed. Of course people are supposed to be interested in the level of skills! Or maybe it's just an old trauma from physical education classes. Everyone there was all too interested in the level of my skills.

3. Planning and being late for your own funeral

Finnish people tend to plan ahead and be early for everywhere they go, that's seen as a virtue in our culture. A rough plan for the week is typically ready on Sunday. I've said bye bye to that. If somebody asks what I'm going to do in the evening I got anxious because well, the evening is so far. We even tried to explain to a Finnish girl who was staying here that no one makes plans for Friday night. It just happens when the time comes. Relax, man!

Actually planning too much can be a negative thing, too. I planned my trip to Hunter Valley for too long and the prices went up. ”Why do you think so hard about spending a hundred dollars? If you have enough money for food and accommodation, you are basically doing OK”, said my roommate. There is truth in that statement.

Otherwise I've kept my Finnish habits. If I'm supposed to start working at nine, I'm there already 8:40, to avoid being late. (In my country being late is a severe offense punished by decades of forced labor.) In the free time we are all so slow that if we are supposed to go somewhere at two, at three the even the last of us has brushed his teeth and changed to something more comfortable. We would all be ate for our own funeral. My great grandmother used to say that if my great grandfather was to be sent to fetch his own death, he'd live forever, he was so slow. I can see same kind of pattern here, too.

4. Screwed it!

I make a lot of mistakes and forget to do a lot of things I am supposed to do. One morning at breakfast I suddenly yelled ”oh f***” and my roommate asked what's wrong. I explained I was supposed to send a confirmation of payment to the language school in order to enroll on a course but I forgot. ”Well, things like that happen, why are you so upset?” said my roommate. Indeed, when I checked my e-mail that afternoon on the way home, the language school had confirmed the payment for me and thanked me for enrolling on the course. Once again I made my blood pressure shoot sky high for nothing.

I often feel I'm bat shit crazy when I talk with my roommates, especially with the once from Southern Europe or South America. I wish I could be that relaxed but I'm plagued my discomfort if something is not quite like it should be. One day I complained that someone left their bike in the narrow corridor to block the way. Later that night I couldn't fall asleep and my Argentinian roommate asked if that's because the bike is in a place where it shouldn't be. Well, maybe. Difficult to relax if the order of all things is not right. I love to label, categorize and analyze everything but here I'm the only one with those tendencies. I sit quietly and learn about life. Why do I take everything so seriously? I'll end up in early grave if I can't relax and just shrug some things off.

5. Stress at work

Before Christmas we were so busy at work we hardly had time to breathe. Being blue in the face we fought against time to finish all the orders on time. I was so stressed but my Chinese colleague was more philosophical. ”It's the busiest time of the ear and we are only two, trying to do the work of three. We are fast, so every day we can finish what needs to be finished”. That's right. A couple of hours of overtime is not even much if two persons are doing the work of three.

6. Rules and regulations

Finns are very law obedient people. We take rules and regulations seriously. We went for a picnic on Christmas day and New Year's eve, both venues being strictly ”no alcohol”. The loudspeakers kept repeating this message every fifteen minutes and my Italian roommates saluted to this with their glasses of rum and coke. One day one of our Italian roommates had come from Coles with a small bunch of cilantro in his shopping bag. Anna had asked where he'd found such a small bunch, usually cilantro is sold in bigger, 3 dollar pots. The Italian guy explained, perplexed, that he just took some of the coriander out of the pot, because he doesn't really need that much, so buying the whole pot would be waste of money. Hearing this, my Finnish heart huddled into a small, tight ball and ceased to exist.

Mikä aika kello kaksi on alkaa juoda viiniä? ”Niin, mitä on aika?”, oli vastaus. Menin loppupäiväksi pitkälleni, koska tunsin maailmankuvani järkkyneen. Niin, mitä on aika? Mitä merkitystä sillä on, jos juo viiniä lounaalla? Jotkut on ympäripäissään jo aamusta.

2. Ryhmähenkisyys

Kaikella kunnioituksella, suomalainen kulttuuri on melko syrjivää.

Viikon karkealuontoinen suunnitelma on yleensä valmis sunnuntai-iltana. Relax, man!

Itse asiassa suunnitelmallisuus on joskus jopa huono asia. Totta sekin.

Muuten olen kuitenkin pysynyt suomalaisena, jos työt alkaa yhdeksältä, olen paikalla jo kahtakymmentä vaille, koska myöhästyminen on synti, josta seuraa muutama vuosikymmen kuritushuonetta. Niin, me olisimme kaikki myöhässä omista hautajaisistakin.

Clothes make the man

I decided to write about one of my favorite topics, clothes. During Christmas and New Year there were sales in every shop and in some places the sales still continue. In my opinion clothes are quite expensive in Australia, even Forever 21 that's a cheap chain store pretty much everywhere else is expensive here. Only H&M stays loyal to its ”affordable fast fashion” image.

When I saw the typical price tag on clothes here I was really happy I didn't pack light. In too many stores you'll get nothing if you aren't prepared to pay around 100 dollars. I wore the same things for 6 months, a trying situation for any woman who loves clothes, and when the Christmas holiday came I lost control of my purse strings and deposited my Christmas bonus at H&M. Victoria's Secret had great sales, too, so some of the bonus ended up there. Underwear for only 8 dollars! I love Victoria's Secret.
The window need cleaning badly but once in my grown up life that's not my problem
Moving constantly is a challenge for me as I usually end up stocking my wardrobe too much in the mistaken belief that I'll stay in some place more than 6 months. When I moved from Poland to Ireland I there was a full Ikea bag and two small plastic bags full of clothes I couldn't take with me, so I donated them to charity. Hopefully they ended up in a good home. And now I'm in the same shitty situation, seeing that my suitcase is about to burst as the little miss couldn't help herself and ended up buying heaps of thing that were not needed in the first place. With increasing horror I'm waiting for my due date in March when I have to start the difficult selection process, which items will follow me home and which won't. At work I thought I could try to sell some of my used stuff. The idea was born when I noticed that some of the clothes I handle daily are in worse shape than the most worn things I own. Seriously, if there are more holes than material in a shirt, I think it's time to throw it away. But if people still wear the kind of stuff I'd be too embarrassed to confess I own, why not sell my own rags?
BTW I love my job because it makes it easier to follow whats fashionable at the moment. Suddenly you notice that everyone's bought the same kind of shirts with bows on the sleeves from the same store, or same kind of kid's clothes with pom poms. And both of those are from hell from the ironing lady's point of view, so boycott them!

PS. I finally created an e-mail for my blog. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about/ comments on living in Australia, Ireland, Poland, South Korea or Finland. Let's chat!

Mun mielestä vaatteet on aika kalliita Australiassa, jopa Forever 21, joka melkein missä tahansa muualla myy pikamuotia suhteellisen edullisesti, on täällä tosi hinnakas.

Vaatteita rakastavalle ihmiselle jatkuva muuttaminen on tosi vaikeaa.

Töissä muuten pysyy hyvin ajan hermolla muodin suhteen. Joskus käy niin, että yhtäkkiä huomaa kaikkien hankkineen samanlaisia paitoja, joissa on rusetit hihoissa, samanlaisia lastenvaatteita, joissa on tupsuja helmassa jne. Ovat muuten rasittavia silittää, älkää suosiko moisia!

PS. Tällä blogilla on viimeinkin sähköpostiosoite.

Wine, cheese chocolate and vodka is what little girls are made of

To celebrate my holidays I booked a wine, cheese chocolate and organic vodka tour to Hunter Valley. Visiting the wine region has been on my list for ages, because when Anna and I retire we will buy a vineyard in France and live happily ever after, being tipsy from dawn till dusk. OK, let's move on..

The world is such a small place, when I boarded the bus I immediately noticed that there are two Finnish couples on the same tour. I introduced myself (the compulsory other Finn on this tour). It takes about two hours to drive to Hunter region from Sydney, including a 15 minutes coffee break. It's so lovely and green outside of the city, I had already forgotten there are more earthy, natural colors than the flashing neon lights of the sex stores and girl houses of our street.
So beautiful- my image of a perfect place
The tour took us to three wineries, one chocolate store and one vodka distillery. We also got to taste really nice cheeses. I learned that men have better palates than women and the taste in wines changes when we age. What tastes good when you are twenty starts to taste like battery acid when you are thirty. Among the Finnish group we were secretly proud of not pouring any tastings to the bucket but drank everything with gusto. OK, I am a bad Finn as everyone knows so I skipped a couple of tastings in the fear of it affecting me too much as I don't hold alcohol well (unlike most Finns).
End products displayed
I really recommend the wine tour for everyone who is interested in wines. The only thing I missed was more chocolate tastings, four pieces of chocolate does not a tasting make, I want at least ten. Lunch was included in the price, it would be too risky to just give people alcohol and nothing to eat. I still felt a bit sorry for my liver after lunch when we started the vodka tastings, though. On the way home I sobered up but then I decided to continue drinking the fermented berry juice cause I happened to have a bottle on my table..

Viinan tuska, hyvästi maksa

Loman kunniaksi varasin viininmaistelureissun Hunter Valleyn viinialueelle.

Suosittelen viinitilareissua kaikille aiheesta kiinnostuneille.

Christmas is coming

This week was very busy at work, I didn't even have time to write a blog post. In the morning I went to work, stayed there for ten hours, came back, ate dinner, slept and the next morning repeated the exercise. So if it so happened that you missed me at least a bit, here's the explanation why there wasn't a post earlier.

My head is still too tired to try to produce a post with something clever to say but I wanted to write something. This week I realized that I'm just complaining about Australia all the time, and all I do is whine about my miserable life. The past weeks I have been stressed for countless reasons, I've been crying so much that my roommates probably think I'm a lunatic who should be sent to asylum. My co-workers think I'm not quite right in the head, because sometimes I cry at work too, when the sheets don't go neatly in the ironing machine.

Our Christmas tree
However today when I went to buy a new lunchbox in Smart Dollar store I saw a bag that proclaimed "I love Australia more than ever" and understood that yes, it's true. I am exactly where I want to be, where I have to be and where I need to be. I'm happy I came here and stayed despite the problematic beginning. I have a lovely family here and the best job ever. Even the weather is good most of the time.

And then about Christmas. I have never liked Christmas much, I don't like how people get all fussy and stressed trying to organize the best Christmas ever and then complain how they have to work so hard for the holidays and how tiring it is. Come on, the feeling of have to is inside the head. No law states that everyone must prepare for the festive season from the beginning of November. And I don't like the commercial Christmas. What's the point of buying lots of things no one actually needs? It's difficult to be on good mood when the world is drowning in plastic and gift wrapping paper. The best thing about Christmas is spending time with the loved ones but my family is too far and it makes me sad. Luckily I have my Anna here and now I'll have a two weeks holiday during which time I will use as much money as I want to and do all the tourist things I thought I wouldn't have the opportunity to do. I wanna go to Hard Rock Cafe, Sydney Tower and maybe even book a wine tasting tour.

Merry Christmas, be happy and love the people around you!

Joulu tulee

Listalla on mm.

Wit is sometimes more useful than money and loneliness warps the mind

Sorry dear readers, today I don't feel like my sarcastic and mocking self. (My mother tells me all the women in our family have a fragment of devil's mirror in our eyes because we see everything in a sardonic way. We can see something funny in the goriest things possible.) However, sometimes even I want to talk seriously to you and I don't want to twist my words too much this time.

Let's talk about my favorite topic, money. No money, no honey or funny. The other day I got really upset when I saw an ad on TV encouraging people to buy a funeral insurance for their spouse. A merry widow was smiling happily and telling the audience how much money she saved by having the insurance when her hubby kicked the bucket. Oh yes, it is terrible to be left without resources if it so happens that your spouse meets a premature death. We were told so by one of our hosts who also recommended that after marrying the man of our dreams we should immediately insure him in case the worst happens. Still, I think it is a bit indelicate to advertise the funeral insurance thing on telly. Could it be taken care of in a more respecting manner? Or maybe I'm just too sensitive. I've been told that happens sometimes. Anyway, if my hypothetical husband were to die and let's assume I loved him, maybe I would just prefer to have him back even if it meant being completely broke to having all the lovely cash from the insurance.

I have recently discovered that money might the reason some people are somewhat imbecile. This interesting discovery was made at work. What's the point of ironing non-crease materials? They are not going to look any better. But if you have money to pay for unnecessary tasks, be my guest. It's only going to add to my wages. Money is a difficult thing. It is most likely impossible to live without but too much of it is not good either. It doesn't matter how much money you have, if you do a shitty job and spend too much time around shitty people, you will feel shitty about your life. So, eat good food, drink good wine and be with good people. At least in theory that's the recipe of happiness.

OK let's move on to the next topic I want to talk about. I have talked about some strange personalities we have met during the travels. There have been farmers who were absolutely nuts and all kind of other people who were equally addled. All these people had one common denominator, and in my opinion that's being lonely. Loneliness warps the mind. If you spend too much time minding your own business and isolated from the society it is entirely possible that you will become intolerant of other people, their needs and wants, their preferences and their lifestyles. All in all you'll start having difficulties adapting to others.

By loneliness I don't mean that these people would have no one around them. I mean that their lack of close relationships seems to have frozen their hearts. Superficial acquaintances and neighbors who occasionally pop in don't count. Now, I have always thought being independent and standing alone on your two feet is a good thing but I have started to think that maybe I have been wrong all along. Maybe people should have the feeling of belonging somewhere, belonging to a group. I don't mean only romantic relationships but in general the sense of belonging together with others, whoever they might be and however they happened to come to your life.

To conclude this chapter, I will tell you that it took me half life to notice that people are more important than money. Life is not about what you can get from other people but what you can give them,. It is better to give than receive. (Mom, pat your back now, you always tell me some day I will understand the things money can't buy.)

Niinkin on joskus kuulemma käynyt.
