Supermarkettien arvaamattomuus- ruokaostoksia maailman laidalla

Kerran loppui kurkut. Mitä helvettiä niille tapahtui? Ajoiko kaikki kurkkurekat ojaan, vai?

Australia on luku itsessään.

The randomness of the supermarket - shopping around the world

OK, I don't mean to sound like a chronic complainer who is never happy with anything but since I am, here we go..

Have you ever been abroad, shopping for groceries and not finding what you need but still being sure it must be somewhere there? I am quite sure there must be corn starch or potato starch somewhere in the supermarket somewhere in the Czech Republic but I haven't been able to locate it. Instead, there are at least 18 different sorts of dried beans (but no black beans, mind you), heaps and heaps of pasta, pasta sauce and rice.

In addition to pasta and rice, all kinds of cheeses fill the shelves, all kinds of meats are stocked there, waiting to be sold to the hungry customers. They even have tempeh (Indonesian soy bean-based product, distantly reminds me of tofu) and inexpensive tofu. Pumpkins of all imaginable varieties. But the Albert store in our building doesn't sell soy sauce. Nor does it sell spices other than salt and pepper, or so it seems. But here we must bear in mind that I am not very good at finding things anywhere, not even in Finland where I can red the labels on the products without any difficulty. When I was living with my parents it was a common occurrence that Mom sent me to buy something which I couldn't find in the store but which actually was in a very easy place when Mom showed it to me.. Poor Mom, she probably hoped to create someone a bit more bright..
Trick or treat?
Every country (except Ireland) I've been living in has surprised me somehow when it comes to food. In South Korea fruits were expensive. Even apples and especially the more "exotic" things like oranges. But they had tons of different noodles and hot pepper pastes, flakes, etc. In Poland a supermarket could just run out of a specific product and it could be gone from the shelves for days. There was a time when my next-door grocery store didn't have cucumbers for days. What the hell happened to cucumbers? Did all the delivery trucks drive off the road?

Australia is a chapter in itself. First of all the prices are terrifying, secondly most of the produce there is Australian grown. For someone coming from a very cold country where only very persistent, humble things can grow during the short summer, it is amazing to think that some place can produce so many kinds of different fruits, vegetables and berries. Well, not all of them taste that great, though, Originally, the plants were apparently used to a different kind of soil..

I will end this rant by telling you this: I went to Albert and they had sold all the zucchinis. Not even a single zucchini was left for me. So no fried zucchini for lunch, hey.

Joten kokkaan, paljon.

Entäs viikonloput sitten? Silloinhan voisi toki datailla normaalin työpäivän ajan, mutta silmälle olisi parempi, jos en sortuisi siihen kiusaukseen. Joten käyn kävelyllä. Parina viime viikonloppuna olen kävellyt kilometritolkulla tutustumassa Prahaan. Sisälläkin on kylmä. Voin luvata.

Say no to internet

The latest update on the very interesting shit eye story, the eye doesn't show any signs of healing and I am totally losing all hope of a fully healthy eye. I've had the viral infection since February. Now I am working on computer for 8 hours a day, so the eye gets very tired and drier than Sahara during the day. Generally I try to avoid spending the entire evening surfing the net to let the eye rest a bit. This decision resulted in an unexpected problem. Since surfing the net seems to be my only hobby, I suddenly have more than enough free time on my hands and I don't actually know what to do with it. I wanted to enroll for a language course but I have to wait until I receive my first full salary. I wanted to also enroll to a yoga class but the above-mentioned excuse is still valid. Have to wait for some funds to magically appear to my account. I could read a normal book, it doesn't make the eye too cranky but I as I already mentioned, before I can buy more books I have to wait for salary. Dunno if the libraries have a lot of English books, maybe I should check their inventories.
Devilish ice cream
So, after this somewhat long prelude, I have found some kind of solution to fill my free time. I have started cooking. Me, who absolutely hated cooking. But cooking is rather time consuming and because I cannot stare the computer screen as much as I used to, I might as well use that time to do something a bit more useful than reading random articles and then quoting them in every possible occasion. So, I cook a lot. All kind of stuff.

What to do in the weekends then? I am tempted to spend at least 8 hours on computer but it's not good for the eye. So I walk. The past two weekends I've been walking around kilometer after kilometer trying to kill time. I have also seen a lot of Prague. Last Saturday I went to the Mexican independence day festival, then to an Asian market to buy some groceries and finally to a flea market to find some warm clothes. It's getting terribly cold here, and all my warm clothes are in Finland. It's too expensive to ship them here so I might just buy some new ones. Btw it's so cold here that last night I actually dreamed of buying a very thick blanket. It's freezing indoors, too. So, that's all the news I wanted to share with you. I do realize that the sick eye terrorizes my thoughts. I should find some other topic to dwell on but believe me, if your eye is sick for months and you can actually feel the difference between the sick eye and the healthy eye every minute you are awake and sometimes in your sleep, too, you will dwell on that, too. Take my word for it.

Viikonloppu

The weekend

The lazy-ass blogger has been too busy doing nothing to write anything lately. It's time to remedy that and write something about nothing.. I think in my last post I was boasting my decision to do something at least 4 days a week. Well.. I'll take that back. Blame it on the lack of imagination but it's terribly difficult to find so much interesting stuff to do. And besides, I'm so bad at finding places that I cannot go too far off the beaten track, otherwise I will end up somewhere in the woods of Moravia before I even notice.. OK; end of excuses. I have still done something. I have gone shopping, as usual.

Today I went for an open-air brunch despite the freezing weather, and on my way back home I happened upon an interesting second hand store, which proved to be fatal. I had a beautiful image in my mind of not buying anything before Christmas (I am probably going to Finland for Christmas so I could bring more clothes at the same time) but that idea disappeared quite quickly. I bought new skirts to look hot professional in the office and debated on weather or not to buy some shirts and dresses as well, but then I remembered I want to visit Vienna and Budapest, so better save some money!

After the second hand store episode I went to an Asian groceries store, planning to buy rice paper, rice noodles, some spices, some fish, some soy sauce ans plenty of other things but ended up buying nothing because the place didn't accept card payments and I didn't have cash. And of course there was absolutely no ATM nearby, so I gave up and went to a bookstore instead. Luckily I couldn't find anything interesting there.

Here is a thousand dollar hint for the ones of you who are planning a shopping holiday in Prague. Don't even dream of finding amazingly cheap clothes. No. Sometimes when I check the price tag, the thing is actually cheaper in euros. Generally speaking the prices for clothes are pretty much the same as elsewhere in Europe. Even H&M is expensive here. I'm shocked to think it was the only place where I was able to afford buying clothes when I was living in Australia!

This week I might go and try studying some Czech, there are free Czech lessons in a tea house close to my place (well, you are supposed to tip the teacher, so "free" depends on how you define "free"). And the next weekend I will visit "little Vietnam" and buy f*ck loads of Vietnamese groceries there. So, maybe the next post will be about that.
