Noosa National Park/ gone sailing

Hello again dear readers, I came to tell you stories of last week. First of all, there's nothing new on the job frontier, especially after we were hit by a bit of rough weather that probably destroyed the crop growing peacefully on the fields. Shame on you, storm! But never mind that, while paint is drying and strawberries ripening, Anna and I are going to enjoy our adventure and travel north to a) escape cold weather and to b) wait for a upturn on the labor market.

On Sunday the weather was almost tolerable so we had the chance to go to a National Park. Some lucky soul had seen a koala in Tee Tree cove but we were not that lucky. Apparently the wildlife in Australia has decided to do their best to avoid the Finnish tourists. Anyway the National Park was spectacular enough even without its inhabitants and it was really nice to be walking n the forest smelling of herbs and aromatic oils.

The national park is located just outside of a city called Noosa, which is a relatively expensive area (no wonder people want to pay or the nice view). The city is quite OK but like some other Australian cities, Noosa also has a main street where all the shops, cafes and restaurants are, and then nothing. It gets a bit boring after a while, especially if you compare them to the cities of Europe that have hundreds of kilometers of small alleys and a labyrinth of streets. Of course, European cities have the advantage of a couple of centuries longer a history than the Australian cities. They've had time to develop. Actually, their development might already be out of control.

On Wednesday we went sailing for the first time ever, but it didn't stop Anna and I (believing strongly in our own abilities) from signing on a race as crew. I was a bit hesitant as I tend to get motion sick even when crossing a river in a boat but luckily the medicine worked and I only felt a bit dizzy in the beginning.

On Wednesdays and Sundays the sailing club organizes a race. It's like an open doors happening when the outsiders can familiarize themselves with the art of sailing, signing on as crew like we did. It only costs 10 dollars (that covers the insurance in case of an accident). Allegedly, the most important task of the crew is to hang on to the ropes for dear life, trying to keep the boat in balance. We learned that selecting the crew's seats wisely has a huge impact on the boat's performance during a race. 

Sailing is not for the empty-handed, so it was a good chance to get a glimpse on the lifestyle of our more affluent brothers and sisters. :) Our captain, David, must have been slightly disappointed getting  on board two foreigners who had the terrible handicap of not knowing a thing about sailing. However, he took it like a man but I guess he was happy to welcome on board two guys who had some sailing experience. Anna and I both got a chance to steer the boat. Anna did it like a pro, me myself felt very unsure and didn't really dare to try without the captain's constant help. Sailing feels a bit like rocket science.

In the end we didn't participate in the race because the wind was not strong enough (my stomach is thankful because its contents didn't try to exit the wrong way). It would have been a boring race, so we went sight-seeing along the coastline and I saw a turtle! Well, at least I saw its back. I learned that a boat the size of the one we were sailing can cross oceans, even smaller boats can. (I still prefer the cruise ships). Our captain David had actually sailed from Spain to Australia via Panama. When we asked how the boat behaves during a storm, the sailors only shrugged and very convincingly said that if the boat capsizes, it will just turn around again. We thought that the jolly Aussies try to fool gullible foreigners, but the sailors assured us that the boats have been built to survive through problematic waters.

All in all, the afternoon sail was very successful and we learned some basic facts about sailing. We were invited to joins Sunday's sail but unfortunately we had to head back to Brisbane. Hopefully we'll have another chance to participate in a race!

Luonnonpuistossa ja purjeveneen kyydissä

Hei rakkaat lukijat, tulin kertomaan teille tarinoita viime aikojen tapahtumista. Töille ei kuulu mitään, varsinkaan sen jälkeen, kun viikonloppuna täällä myrskysi niin kovasti, että satokasvit kokivat kovia pelloillaan. Mutta ei se mitään, silläkin aikaa kun maali kuivuu ja mansikat kypsyy, me Annan kanssa seikkaillaan ja odotellaan noususuhdannetta.

Kyllä näitä maisemia passaa katsella

Sunnuntaina ilma oli jo sen verran selkeää, että pääsimme kävelylle kansallispuistoon. Joku onnekas oli nähnyt koalan Teepuupoukamassa, mutta meillä ei ikävä kyllä ollut moinen tuuri. Ilmeisesti australian villit eläimet haluaa kiertää suomalaisen turistin kaukaa. Joka tapauksessa maisemissa oli aivan tarpeeksi ihailemista ja oli mukava samoilla raikkaassa yrttien tuoksuisessa metsässä.

Kansallispuiston rantareitillä

Kansallispuisto on paikassa nimeltä Noosa, joka on melko kallista aluetta (ei ihme niillä maisemilla). Kaupunki oli ihan sympaattinen, mutta tän alueen aussikaupungit on kyllä vähän tylsiä, ei niissä ole paljon muuta kuin pääkatu ja kauppoja sen reunalla. Kun ajattelee euroopan vanhoja kaupunkeja ja niiden sokkeloisia kujia, niin ihmettelee, miten eri käsitys ihmisillä voi olla kaupungista. Toisaalta australialaiset kaupungit ovat nuorempia, eikä niillä ole ollut aikaa sokkeloitua.

Tänään mentiin purjehtimaan ensimmäistä kertaa ikinä, mutta siitä huolimatta minä ja Anna (taitoihimme luottaen) pestauduttiin purjeveneelle "miehistöksi". Vähän arvelutti, kun on taipumusta merisairauteen, mutta onneksi matkapahoinvointilääke toimi, eikä koko reissun aikana ollut muita oireita kuin pienoinen huimaus.

Katsokaa kaikkia noita köysiä, purjehtiminen ei oo niin yksinkertaista miltä se kuulostaa

Keskiviikkoisin ja sunnuntaisin purjeveneklubi järjestää kilpapurjehduksen, jonne siis pääsee ulkopuolisetkin mukaan 10 dollarin miehistöhinnalla, joka kattaa tapaturmavakuutuksen. Miehistön tärkein tehtävä oli käsittääkseni roikkua vuoroin kummallakin reunalla tasaamassa veneen kulkua, koska tuuli mielellään kallistelee sitä. Opimme, että kilpapurjehduksessa matkustajien istumapaikalla on ratkaiseva merkitys veneen käyttäytymiseen.

Olimme satamassa hyvissä ajoin katselemassa muita merenkulkijoita. Purjeveneily ei ole tyhjätaskujen harrastus, joten oli todella mahtava kokemus päästä katsomaan, miten hyvätuloiset elävät :) Lienee laivamme kippari David ollut onnesta soikeana, kun sai niskoilleen kaksi ulkomaalaista tyttöä, joilla ei ole ollenkaan purjehduskokemusta. Hän kuitenkin nieli mahdollisen pettymyksensä, ja onneksi samaan seurueeseen liittyi myös kaksi miestä, jotka olivat tutumpia purjeveneiden kanssa. Pääsimme Annan kanssa kumpikin ohjaamaan venettä. Annalta se sujui kun vanhalta tekijältä, itse olin liian pelokas tarttumaan ruoriin kunnolla. Vaikutti vähän rakettitieteeltä.

Minyman rikkaampi puoli

Loppujen lopuksi emme menneet purjehtimaan kilpaa, koska tuuli oli liian tyyntä (vatsalaukku kiittää, kun sisältö ei yrittänyt poistua väärään suuntaan), vaan ajelimme rannikon edustalla katselemassa maisemia, ja onnistuin jopa näkemään kilpikonnan. Sain tietää, että purjeveneemme kokoisella ja pienemmälläkin veneellä voi vaikka ylittää valtameren ja David olikin aiemmin purjehtinut Espanjasta Panaman kautta Australiaan, joskin venho oli ollut hieman tämänpäiväistä suurempi. Kun kysyimme, miten vene reagoi myrskysäähän, miehet vain hymähtivät ja sanoivat, että jos vene kippaa nurin, se kääntyy takaisin oikein päin. Ajattelimme, että nyt taas ulkkaria vedetään nekusta, mutta purjehdusseuralaisemme vakuuttivat, että veneet on rakennettu tätäkin mahdollisuutta silmällä pitäen, ja veneeseen on lisätty (ymmärtääkseni) ekstrapainoa, joka pitää huolen oikein päin kääntymisestä.

Reissu oli todella onnistunut ja kippari ainakin yritti opettaa meille perustietoja purjehtimisesta. Saimme kutsun tulla purjehtimaan myös sunnuntaina, mutta valitettavasti suuntana oli taas Brisbane, joten uusintayritys jää seuraavaan kertaan. Toivottavasti päästään kuitenkin vielä toistekin veneilemään matkan aikana. :)

An Australian family

The past 5 days have been quite busy and we have experienced so many new things that it's difficult to decide what should I write about first. Well, Anna and I joined a website called Workaway where you can find a job that'll offer you accommodation and meals but no salary. We thought it would be a nice way to get to know Australians, the local culture and at the same time improve our English. That's how we ended up at Sunshine Coast in a city called Landsborough. We help in the garden and last week we helped to organize a 21st birthday party. 21st is a big thing in Australia, usually arranged by the parents. We felt like we were arranging a wedding. 50 guests had been invited and it took several days to get the venue and all the snacks ready. Why don't we have parties like that in Finland?

Well that's something worth celebrating--

This afternoon we went sight-seeing. We visited Maleny hippie town and Monteville, which reminded us of an alpine village. The landscape here is just amazing, breathtaking and wonderful. Both the villages we visited were relatively small but they had all kind of shops selling anything from ceramics to textiles and the writer could easily spend an entire day there, wandering from one shop to another.

In this area you can see the peculiar looking Glass House Mountains. The mountains are actually the "cores" of the volcanoes, the molten lava cooled inside the them. The nature here is spectacular, evergreen plants, sunshine and beaches. You can spot dolphins and whales during your morning walk on the beach but unfortunately we haven't been that lucky yet. Today we saw kangaroos and their joeys near the University of Sunshine Coast and I think I saw a fruit bat fly past my window. It's a pity that of not all the exotic animals are that nice. In the canal behind the house there are bull sharks, so it is possible to become their midnight feast by tripping on the jetty and falling into the canal. I'm sure they are aware of that, too. In every possible corner there's a disgusting spider spinning its even more disgusting web to catch poor unsuspecting flies. Life would be so much easier without them. What would happen to the ecosystem if all the spiders just disappeared? And one more fact about the terrible nature. Here in Australia they have built specific bridges for opossums so they can cross the roads safely. Or that was the master plan. But guess what? Foxes are clever and they've noticed that it pays off to wait at the end of the bridge. It's like a drive in MacDonalds for them!

Elämää australialaisessa perheessä

Viimeseen viiteen päivään on mahtunut vaikka mitä uutta. Liityttiin Annan kanssa Workaway-sivustolle, josta löytyy hommaa majoitusta ja ruokaa vastaan. Ajatus vaikutti hyvältä, päästäisiin tutustumaan australialaisiin ja kasvattamaan paikallistuntemusta ja sanavarastoa. Niin me sitten päädyttiin Sunshine Coastille Landsboroughiin auttamaan puutarhahommissa ja valmistelemaan 21-vuotissynttäreitä. Kaksykköset on tässä maassa kova sana, bileet, jotka vanhemmat järjestää kersoilleen. Meistä tuntu siltä, että oltiin vähintään häitä järjestelemässä. Vieraita oli kutsuttu viitisenkymmentä ja tarjottavassa ja juhlapaikan järjestelemisessä kului useampi päivä. Herää kysymys, miksei Suomessa koskaan juhlita suuresti juuri mitään?

Iltapäivällä mentiin ajelulle lähiympäristöön, tutustuttiin Malenyn hippikaupunkiin ja läheiseen Montevilleen, joka on kuin pikkunen eurooppalainen vuoristokylä. Maisemat matkalla on aivan upeat ja vaikka kumpikin kylä on melko pieni, tämä minä saisi päivänsä kulumaan helposti kiertelemällä kaikissa putiikeissa, joissa myydään kaikkea mahdollista keramiikasta hedelmiin.

Kaukana tuolla siintää meri

Tällä alueella Queenslandissa on Glass House Mountains, jotka on vanhojen tulivuorten "ytimiä", eli siis tulivuoren sisän jähmettynyttä laavaa. Luonto on muutenkin todella upeaa, ikivihreitä kasveja, merenrantaa ja auringonpaistetta. Rannalla voi nähdä delfiinejä ja valaita, mutta me ei olla nähty vielä kumpiakaan. Tänään näin ensimmäistä kertaa koskaan kengurun poikineen, ja äsken ikkunan ohi liihotteli hedelmälepakko. Kaikki eksoottiset eläimet on täällä, myös ne vähemmän miellyttävät. Takapihalta voi kävellä suoraan haialtaaseen. Hait tulevat jokea pitkin näihin pieniin kanaviin, joiden rannoille on rakennettu paljon taloja. Haitkin varmaan tietää, miten lähellä niiden iltapala on. Lisäksi joka nurkalla virittelee verkkoaan joku trooppinen hämähäkki, joka väijyy pahaa-aavistamattomia kärpäsraukkoja. Mitähän ekosysteemille tapahtuisi, jos hämähäkit katoaisi maailmankartalta? Kuultiin tänään, että fiksut ketut on opetelleet väijymään opossumeja niille tehtyjen "siltojen" juurella. Kamala luonto!
