Joogaretriitti on mäen päällä.
Yhden niistä mainitsinkin jo viime postauksessa, eli aussien joustavan suhtautumisen ammatin vaihdokseen. Toinen asia on matkustelu.

Greetings from Mission Beach

The days here in the jungle are similar to each other, in the morning I go to work, in the afternoon I go back home and on the way I try to avoid anything that jumps or crawls. In other words, it's difficult to try to find a topic to write about and I've been too lazy to even try. However, I have a day off today so I decided to make the effort and write about something about our live here in a yoga retreat and the thoughts that have surfaced during our stay.

The location on the top of a hill is beautiful but not very practical
In the previous posts I've "criticized" Australia for several things I find odd but of course there must be some other things that are better here. I already mentioned one such thing in the previous post, namely career changes. The other thing Australians understand but Finnish people and surely many other people, too, struggle with, is traveling.

Here people are more open to our "nomadic" lifestyle of wandering from one place to the next. In Finland people seem to think that life is a journey on a road leading straight from point A to point B and all the bumps and bends, which are seen as failures anyway. Actually, everything that doesn't comply with the prevalent norm goes under the title "failure". When I talked about my trip to Australia in Finland or with Finns, people were just puzzled. How is it possible that someone who's almost 30 doesn't want to concentrate and is not interested in career and starting a family? Well, too bad, I'm just not interested. Why do I have to have a reason?

I've met plenty of different people in this yoga place. I just had lunch and an interesting discussion with a lady who's staying here for holidays. She told me that Australian parents encourage their kids to travel and try different lifestyles. It's not an odd thing for young people in Australia to sped a year or two traipsing around the globe. It's more like a maturity rite, something that'll help you to grow and develop as a person. An investment in your own life.

We've met a lot of people who share this attitude. They all represent different profession, educational background, age group and most likely also different religious and political groups. It's a refreshing feeling to feel "ordinary", to do things that many others do, too. It's nice to hear encouraging comments, to hear that people think we are doing the right thing here. Why should you continue living inside a box when there's so much to see and experience outside of the box?

So there's one thing that's better in Australia. People have noticed that there are many ways to live and they are all equally meaningful and valuable. It's possible to try different things and if you don't succeed, then what? You'll surely succeed in your future endeavors.  I hope I will take that kind of encouraging attitude with me.

Mission Beach
We visited the Mission Beach Sunday Market today. There's not that much to do in the jungle except for being outdoors and relaxing, so going to the market was a nice opportunity to go out. We met a Finnish couple, they have been living here almost 50 years now. We chatted with them for a while and I realized that Finns have always moved abroad, to North America, to Sweden, to Australia and to many other countries, to find a job or just for the adventure. The entire human kind has always been moving from one place to another. It's not a big deal.

Cathy in Wonderland

No, I didn't eat glowing mushrooms, take drugs or even get drunk as a skunk, so wonderland doesn't mean the "realm of illusions caused by the inebriated state of the subject", I'm referring to the mother of all wonderlands, the amazing Oz and difference between Australia and Finland.

My reality looks like this
First difference to be commented on is laundry. Most of the Australians we have met have had some very peculiar ways to do laundry, like using cold water and only using quick programs. What the heck people, don't you have any imagination? Yes, we used the quick, water and energy saving program that only took 15 minutes, BUT when I took the clothes out of the machine, some of them were still dry. Yeah, right, I should think that is obvious. What about cold water then? Well, laundry powder doesn't even dissolve in cold water so no wonder the clothes are still full of stains when you hang them to dry.

I totally understand that people want to save water, especially if they rely on rain water, but still I feel like there's a time and a place for saving and this is not it. I want my clothes clean and neat. And there is no way I will save water when it comes to washing dishes, you can't really wash plates and cutlery in a greasy, dirty water unless you want to contract cholera.

And fruits and veggies then? Well, most of the fruits consumed in Finland are imported because the climate is too cold for growing anything except apples and the occasional plum. Potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables and such are grown but many kinds of vegetables are imported because domestic production can't meet the demand or because it's cheaper to import them or because of several reasons I have no idea about. In Australia almost everything is Australian grown. Fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, everything is Australian (or at least that's what they want us to believe). The prices are just absurd and I can't remember when was the last time I saw ripe tomatoes. The quality of the products is.. well we can't really say "quality" in this context.

It made us think how is it possible that a country like Finland that relies heavily on imports can still offer the consumers better products at a cheaper price that Australia, where everything is domestically produced. OK, the salaries in Oz are better than in Finland but somehow I get the feeling that a good percentage of the local products are picked and packed and probably also delivered by backpacker slaves.
The serfs on the field
Our conclusion is that people are not very innovative here. No worries attitude has gone one step too far, work is done in an inefficient and expensive way. Apparently the government doesn't subsidize agriculture like there are in European union, so the farmer's salary depends purely on the sales. Or whatever, I have no idea, I just feel something must be amiss here.

The third and last thing I keep wondering is the flexibility regarding work. That seems to be inherent in Australians. Most of the Australians we know (we don't know that many Australians, so please notice that the sample size does not allow reliable  generalizations of the Australian labor market to be made) have tried many different occupations and done jobs that don't have anything in common with each other. It is acceptable to change your mind and want to do something else. People are not interested in your educational background, they are interested in whether or not you can do the job. A teacher can decide to become a chef and a chef can decide to start a firm that has nothing to do with food. Try this in Finland and you'll find a lot of obstacles on the way. "You don't have the education, you need a certificate for that". On the other hand sometimes I feel the lack of efficiency is mainly due to people who do things they don't know how to do. But that's life. A coin has two sides. Whoever finds the golden middle way will most likely receive a Nobel prize for it.

Cathy ihmemaassa

Kaikkihan me tiedämme käytännön pilat, ja kuinka hahahaa kaikkia naurattaa, paitsi vitsin kohdetta. Mulla oli just semmonen olo.

Your life is a joke

Yesterday was a remarkable day indeed. I reached the state of enlightenment. It all started with a seemingly small, even unremarkable event. I saw a huge-huge spider sitting (or whatever it is they do) on a coffee cup. I went to complain to my employer about its presence, so she came to see it and said it's looking for a nest for herself. A nest, repeated the echo inside my head, reaching a high, hysteric tone. Well, that was alarming. So the satanic thing is going to be a permanent feature in my mornings?

Looks like a paradise, yes? But what was there in a paradise? Oh yes, a snake..
And that was the exact moment of my enlightenment. Buddhists were only partially right when they discovered that life is suffering. Well, it can be, but mainly it is just a joke. We all know the ill-natured, mean practical jokes and pranks some mean and ill-natured people play on their poor victims. Hahaha everyone laughs except for the butt of the joke. That's exactly how I felt. Oh that girl is afraid of spiders? Let us place an enormous specimen right here, so she'll see it in a minute and we are all going to have such a good time on her expense. Ho ho Ho! Oh, she is not laughing? No sense of humor, duh.

After the spider incident I felt angry for the remainder of the day and decided that I have seen enough of rural Australia. I'll leave this place after a couple of weeks and I will never ever set my foot again in a place where there's nature creeping in through doors and windows, because it just makes me feel anxious. It's tiring to be scared all the time, anticipating the appearance of the next monster. And Aussies are less than helpful, being so used to their horrid insects that they don't even want to kill them because they are useful. Useful, my ass. Who knows, maybe cockroaches are useful, too, but they are murdered en masse everywhere. Flying foxes are useful, but still the cute, dog-faced things are mercilessly killed just because they are flying foxes.

Without the nature aspect to it, this place would be a very lovely experience. People are nice, friendly and treat us well. The views are spectacular. Unfortunately I have no more photos to upload here. I've been working in the kitchen and after I'm done with the duties there, I haven't had enough energy or courage to go outside and take photos. The moral of the lesson here has probably been the fact that I've noticed that I'm a city person, after all. Sterile, closed spaces indoors where everything can be controlled by pushing buttons are for me. Wild, uncontrollable outdoorsy spaces I will, with pleasure, leave for those of us who are not fainthearted.

Indigenous Australia

Cairns Art Gallery has an exhibition of contemporary indigenous art and we went to see it last week. There was also an indigenous art fair during the weekend. It's a pity I couldn't afford to buy a thing at the fair but on the other hand a painting is a bit difficult to travel with. Being inspired by these events, I decided to write a word about indigenous Australians. I don't mean to write a boring report of the current situation of indigenous people or examine the governments actions in this matter, but just to share with you some observations I've made since arriving to Australia.

We heard a lot of indigenous Australians from one of hour hosts. He had been working in an indigenous community for quite some time. He always spoke about them in a warm and respectful manner. Another host family, however, was horrified by the amounts of money Australian government wastes on education and support of the indigenous people. This family seemed to think the indigenous people are better off than other Australians because they receive special financial support from the government.

Original Australians were not so much present in Brisbane but here in Cairns we meet them quite often. Unfortunately the ones you see staggering in the streets are often drunk and spend their time in the parks getting even more drunk. In this light it seems a bit strange to think that they are the more successful and better off Australians. Just for comparison, I haven't seen that many Australians of European origin getting wasted in the parks during daytime.

The indigenous people are the losers in the story of colonizing Australia. The European settlers got possession of a huge paradise island, natural resources and an opportunity to get a better life and standard of living. The indigenous people got the Western way of life, McDonald's, diabetes, obesity, alcoholism and all the social problems connected to Western lifestyle. The drunk indigenous people wandering in the streets are like ghosts, people, who don't have anything to lose because everything has been already lost.

Western people often forget that our own culture is just one culture among the others, it's in no way superior to the other cultures and it's not universal. By universal I try to say that we can't just assume that people with different backgrounds will adapt to our culture without problems. Why should they even try, they have their own cultures much more suitable for them. Many Western people can't adapt to our culture either, we have more than enough problems related to our lifestyle. But the indigenous people have it worse than we do. They have mainly lost their traditional culture, their lifestyle has been swiped off the map and they've been forced to adapt to a culture that's strange to them and differs from their own traditional ways of living. No wonder alcohol starts to look like a savior.

Well, I think it's time for me to stop preaching. The art fair was a very positive and happy event where indigenous people were presenting themselves and their culture that's finally being respected and valued by other Australians as well. In my opinion the indigenous art is beautiful, maybe that's your opinion, too?

Vertailun vuoksi, valkoisia ausseja harvemmin näkee pultsuamassa puistoissa.

Mielestäni aboriginaalien taide on todella kaunista, ehkäpä tekin olette samaa mieltä?

Rich boyfriend

Well, that's it. The solution to all the problems, at least according to Australian men. Almost every single Aussie geezer has been under the assumption that all the female backpacker are fresh graduates shamelessly exploiting daddy's credit card (n.b. daddy's credit card, since mum is as useless as the daughter, she never made any money of her own) to run around the world. Female backpackers are constantly running out of money and are probably a bit retarded, too, so they need someone to look after them 24/7 because, quite simply, they can't manage on their own. All in all, it is highly likely that the desperate daddy sent the girl to the other side of the world hoping that she would finally do one thing right and snare A RICH MAN.

I found something better than a rich man
People seem genuinely surprised when they hear that Anna and I have actually worked and saved money for this trip. What the heck, a woman can earn money, never thought this day would come.. I don't know if I should laugh or cry and I definitely don't know who's the dimwit in this story. It could be me because I went to school instead of marrying a rich man and living in luxury happily ever after. It could be those guys who have lived to quite an advanced age and never understood that not every woman needs or wants a man to provide for her. Just last week I found a 2 dollar coin all by myself, I know how to look after myself! (In addition I will need to warn you, young girls, a rich man might be the solution for one particular problem but he's also a potential source of a million problems you never had before.)

I get it, our trip is an easy way to start a conversation and I'm sure some people are interested in the financial side of our journey, too. And the Australians don't necessarily know that Finnish parents are not in the habit of sponsoring their grown up kid's expensive trips abroad. Having said that, I still get annoyed when I hear all this nonsense about rich father and boyfriend. It's like a broken record playing the same track non-stop. Selling my freedom and being financially dependent on someone? Not for all the money in Swiss Bank. Well, talking about money, maybe all the money in Swiss bank would be enough, I just wanted to make the point clear. (The point being, freedom is more important than money.)

What went wrong here? Why weren't these stone age attitudes and gender roles left behind when stone age ended? It was in the news not long ago that a certain species of monkey have entered stone age. Beware, Australian men, the monkeys are soon going to be the more developed species and they'll steal your jobs and women (well, at least the ones who can't run fast enough).

Rikas poikaystävä

Siinä se on. Ratkaisu kaikkiin ongelmiin, ainakin australialaisten miesten mielestä. Lähes kaikkien kohtaamiemme aussiukkojen mielikuva naisreppureissaajista on seuraava: juuri yliopiston lopettanut, isän rahoilla (siis huom. ei äidin rahoilla, koska eihän äitireppana mitään rahaa ansaitse) reissaava ehkä hieman tyhmä tyttö, joka on jatkuvasti persaukinen ja tarvitsee 24/7 valvontaa, koska ei se vaan yksin pärjää. Joku, jonka vanhemmat todennäköisesti lähettivät maailman toiselle puolelle, jotta tyttö tajuaisi viimein tehdä edes jotain oikein, eli hankkia sen RIKKAAN MIEHEN.

On olemassa rikasta miestäkin parempia asioita
Ai siis nainenkin voi ansaita rahaa, no johan on aikoihin eletty.

Pikamatka Aasiaan
Ensimmäisenä kävelimme bambumetsikön halki. Bambu on yksi lempparikasveistani, ainoa huonekasvi, jota en ole onnistunut epähuomiossa tappamaan. Nämä olivat tosin venähtäneet vähän huonekasvia korkeammiksi.

Tropiikin maisemat

Yllä oleva kuva voisi olla otettu oikeassa trooppisessa metsässä oikealla maaseudulla. Paikka on kuitenkin vain npin 4 kilometrin päässä kaupungin keskustasta. PS. Joessa voi olla krokotiilejä, uimista ei suositella.

Zhanjiang-ystävyyspuutarha
Bambumetsän jälkeen löysimme satumaisen kiinalaistyylisen puutarhan. Zhanjiangin ystävyyspuutarha oli mielestäni koko alueen kaunein paikka. Itä-Aasian arkkitehtuurissa ja puutarhasuunnittelussa on sitä jotakin. Ystävyyspuutarha oli ihanan rauhallinen ja tyyni paikka. Eikö tekisi mieli mennä tuonne lammelle piknikille?

Tältäkö sademetsä näyttää?
Hyttystenpuremien uhallakin kävelimme pienoissademetsän halki. Onneksi oli kuitenkin puisia kävelyreittejä, joita pitkin pääsi kipittämään.

Orkidea

Luonto on kieltämättä ihmeellinen.

Perhosen lepohetki
Viimeisinpänä kävimme maa aikojen alussa-puutarhassa, jossa pääsee tutustumaan kasvien evoluutioon ja erityisesti Australian kosteiden trooppisten alueiden syntyyn.

Puutarhassa järjestetään opastettuja kierroksia arkiaamuisin, ehkä ensi viikolla saamme lisäinfoa näkemistämme kasveista.

Cairns Botanic Garden

Today we went to the botanic garden for a morning walk. This post will be an easy read as I will just upload some photos. The gardens were very beautiful and there's no admission fee. So let us begin the tour!

Let's explore!
Impressive sign isn't it? The garden itself is not too big but one day was not enough to cover the entire area. We'll need to stay in Cairns so we can go back some day to see the parts we hadn't the energy to see today. We got a bit tired after several hours of walking. :) They have some hiking tracks we'd like to try and I'd like to see aboriginal plant use garden as well.
A trip to Asia
The first garden was dedicated to bamboo. Bamboo is one of my favorite plants because my decorative bamboo is the only plant I haven't managed to kill. These bamboos are a bit taller than mine, though.
Tropic

The picture above is like a real tropical forest in real countryside. It's hard to believe that the city center is only 4 kilometers away. PS. Be warned, crocodiles inhabit these waters, so don't go swimming there if you don't want to lose a leg.

Zhanjiang friendship garden

After the bamboo forest we saw this lovely spot, the Zhanjiang friendship garden. I think this was probably the most beautiful place in the entire garden and so calm, too. Would be nice to go for a picnic there. I guess I must be Asian at heart as I always feel at home whenever I see places like this.

Does a rainforest look like this?
Hazarding a thousand mosquito bites we walked through this mini rainforest. Luckily they had made a wooden boardwalk through the area as the ground was very muddy.

Orchids
There was a glasshouse in the middle of the garden. They keep all the carnivorous plants locked up in there.. In addition there were pretty orchids and butterflies. Hopefully the butterflies don't get eaten by the carnivorous plants. Those plants are very clever you know. They grow in a soil that's typically poor in nutrients so they use insects as dietary supplement.

A butterfly's afternoon nap
Lastly we visited the Gondwanan Heritage garden where you can learn more about plant evolution and the development of Australian wet tropics fauna.

They have guided tours in the garden in the morning, maybe next week we will participate in a tour and learn more about the plants we saw.

The most wanted commodity

What's the world's most wanted commodity? Oil? Rice? Wheat? Corn? Water? Gold? Ore? No. It's time.

Australia looks quite small and harmless on the map, but the distances here are unbelievable. We are in Cairns now, the northernmost point of our itinerary. The non-stop bus trip from Brisbane would take around 30 hours. Train from Brisbane to Rockhampton took us the entire day (ok, so it was an extremely slow train). We took a night bus from Rocky to Airlie Bach and finally made a 10-hours journey to Cairns. My bottom might have been a bit numb during the journey but my mind was active and working on several things, one of them being the topic of this post, namely time.

Gazing at the ocean makes you forget all about time
Long distance travel makes you think about time. Western people are always in a hurry from point a to point b, preferably via points c and d to maximize efficiency. When I was living in Korea I often ran to the subway even though I knew the next train will arrive in 2 minutes. Everyone else was running, too. I've been working in a company where being 3 minutes late is seen as a transgression requiring corporal punishment. If an event in a Western country starts 12 o'clock, it means 12 o'clock and all the participants are there, except for the Finns who were there 11:53 as in our culture we value being ahead of time. Having left the time-crazy world behind for a while, I've noticed that our existence is cursed by the accuracy of the Swiss watches.

You know what? 100 years ago Japan was a backward developing country. Time meant nothing to the citizens of old Japan. The same thing can be said about many other countries that are today seen as the successful, well performing, world leading countries. The Koreans developed their busy lifestyle in the aftermath of Korean war and the following hectic years of rebuilding the country. In the mists of time people used to speak about lazy, thieving Germans and not so long ago even corporate America was only an underdeveloped overseas colony of Great Britain. The people in these cultures had plenty of time but then, along industrialization, some crafty people noticed that time is the easiest commodity to buy and sell because it's a renewable resource so we can't really run out of it. And so it all began.
Cairns beach
Think about your own life. You sell 8 hours of your day to the highest bidder, at a  price that's either quite good or not so good. The company in question may buy your time for a short period of time, like 3 months, or some lucky people get a permanent position, which actually means that they've sold their entire life to the labor market. In our free time we are hopelessly busy as we try to cram all the thing we really enjoy doing to what's left of our 24/7. A person's worth is measured against how busy they are. The busier you are, the more successful you are. It's trendy to be busy. Western people scorn the people who still have time but aren't we all just jealous of those who have something that we would like to have?
Night falls and fruit bats arrive to Cairns
We speak in a disdainful manner about the "lethargic people of developing countries" who "waste their time" sitting idle in the shadow of a tree. The sad fact is they probably enjoy their life more than we enjoy our fast paced, scheduled and fully booked life. A plane departs from Madagascar when it's full. A European plane leaves when it's scheduled to leave or heads will roll and passenger will sulk all the way to the destination. I can only imagine that the lucky people who still got some time and enjoy their life, laugh at us from the bottom of their hearts. What does it matter if someone's 3 minutes late? It's not the end of the world, quite possibly the world doesn't even notice such a minor incident. Does it really matter if someone misses the train? The next one will arrive in 2 minutes. There are places where the bus runs once a week and that's considered "often". There are still countries where people have time and I think that's great. In our world our time is sold out the day we are born.

Maailman halutuin kulutushyödyke

Mikä on maailman eniten ostettu asia? Öljy? Riisi? Vehnä? Maissi? Vesi? Kulta? Malmi?

Merta katsellessa aika unohtuu
Pitkien matkojen kulkeminen pistää ihmisen ajattelemaan aikaa. Länsimaisilla ihmisillä on aina kiire paikasta a paikkaan b mielellään paikkojen c ja d kautta, jotta saadaan maksimoitua tehokkuus. Kun asuin Koreassa, huomasin usein juoksevani metroon, vaikka tiesin, että seuraava tulee kahden minuutin päästä. Kaikki muutkin juoksivat metroon.

Kiire on muotia.
