About solidarity

I want to write about something that made my blood boil with anger last weekend. We had a fire alarm in the night. It happens quite often on this street that an alarm of some kind goes off, the noise is something you easily get used to, so at this point it'll take an airstrike to wake us up. That's why our room was one of the last rooms to evacuate on that night. I shouted ”fire alarm, wake up” until the even sleepier roommates of ours woke up and left the room.

But apparently that's not the done thing. Anna heard this horror story in the morning when she was eating breakfast at the same time with a German guy who wondered what fire alarm Anna was talking about. The guy didn't wake up even though the siren kept wailing at least fifteen minutes and his roommates were quick enough to evacuate themselves an leave him to face his faith in a house that could have been on fire. Luckily the house wasn't on fire but the alarm was caused by the foam extinguisher some drunk asses emptied in the corridor. Everyone of us has their own sense of humor, we can't help that.

The guy left behind, sleeping in his bed gets on my nerves because that kind of behavior is unacceptable. We are all pretty much alone here, travelling far away from those who love us and care if we are alive or dead. Would it be too much to ask to ask people to care for each other a bit? Maybe the world would be a bit better place if we thought about other people, too, not just ourselves. At least in an emergency, please!
