Thoughts

I haven't been posting anything lately. It's been shit busy at work, half of the normal crew is on holidays and the lady who was supposed to cover for the holidays decided to resign after the first week with us. Another thing is that I want to meet my friends and walk around the city while I am still here, because the last week here starts today. My mood is a bit melancholic, even though a part of me already welcomes and misses a change. New adventures are about to begin. Slowly but surely I've been planning my trip around Asia. In Vietnam I'd like to go on a cruise on Mekong River, in Singapore there is a Haw Par Villa Park, introducing Chinese folklore and mythology. I absolutely want to go there.
I will miss the city
Here in Sydney I have been planning to visit Sydney Tower but never made it as far as actually booking the ticket. So, if, fr example, there is a Bangkok Tower, I will probably go there. Actually it is nice that I didn't hurry and do everything here in Sydney, now there are so many things to look forward to doing in Asia. And in Asia all those experiences cost a fraction of their price in Australia. OK, now I will need to get ready for lunch. I try to write a bit more later on.

On the other hand, I will not miss these prices

Ajatuksia

Mieliala on hieman haikea, vaikka tavallaan muutosta kaipaankin jo, on silti vaikeaa jättää kaikki tutut kuviot taakseen ja jälleen kerran suunnata kohti uusia seikkailuja.

The Dark History of Sydney

Australia is the only country in the world that began as a penal colony for those who where too resourceful for their own good. After the undesired independence of USA, Great Britain faced a new difficulty; the trans-Atlantic transport of her less wanted subjects should stop and another final destination for petty criminals like chicken thieves had to be found ASAP. After all, it was important to reign in the proliferating underworld.

Then it so happened that a captain Cook crashed his ship on a coral reef on the coast of Australia. He was by means not the first white person to set foot on Australian soil, probably he was not even the second. However, Cook had one benefit over the previous visitors. He realized he had found Australia and he claimed it for Great Britain. (Apparently the other white people who had come in touch with Australia had assumed they had landed on one more island belonging to Papua New Guinea or Indonesia.) So Australia became British and all the numerous criminals doing their time in the crowded prison ships on Thames soon found themselves on a ship sailing towards the southern hemisphere.
Convict settlements in Australia
Until 1970's the origin of Australia as a penal colony was something people did not talk about. Your average Australian would have been horrified to find out that someone in their family had had a too entrepreneurial soul and as a direct consequence, unfortunately ended up in Australia instead of hangman's noose. Those kind of branches of the family tree were chopped down immediately. Luckily the attitudes have changed and nowadays the distant chime of chains and leg irons is probably like beautiful music that many Aussies wish to hear in their family tree. Australians are proud of their history and that's good.

We visited the Hyde Park Barracks to familiarize ourselves with the circumstances in which the convicts lived. The place is slightly depressing. The most interesting fact was that at some point in the history, some people committed crimes to reunite with their families. If one of the brothers was shipped to Australia, he soon untruthfully described Australia as heaven on earth in his letters home and tempted the ones staying there to actively seek a one-way ticket to Australia, e.g by stealing a loaf of bread. For example 4 brothers of the same Irish family came to Australia like this.
Hyde Park Barracks
Internationality has long been a feature of Sydney. In addition to the British and Irish, Chinese soon appeared in the newly found country. The Sydney of today is a truly international city where anyone can probably feel like home not depending on the country of origin. It's a feature I most like about Sydney. The city had people representing every religion, every political orientation, every continent. No one stands out from such a variable crowd. You are as likely to hear English on the streets as Chinese or German. I can imagine living here a bit longer.

That's why I was very surprised to hear that things haven't always been like this. In my Vietnamese class there is an elderly man from Vietnam, he has lived in Australia since childhood and has now retired. He told me that in his childhood immigrant children were not allowed to the classroom. The teacher just checked they appeared in the morning and then sent them outside to play. ”This is not your country, you don't need to learn English.” There were separate restrooms for the white and the first floor of a double decker bus was only for the white people. Well, here you see that the one who is intolerant of the other loses most. The view form the upper floor of a double decker bus is way better. Let's all be happy that Sydney has gone through a remarkable ”face lift” since those times.

Hyde Park Barracks

Katsokaas, näköala bussin yläkerrasta on paljon parempi. Onneksi Sydney on kokenut melkoisen kasvojen kohotuksen noista ajoista,

About cleaning hotels

This is a post I've been planning to write for a long time. Let me take you back to the beginning. When I first arrived to Sydney as a young girl full of hopes and dreams, my first job was cleaning 4.5 star hotels. It was a job that made me totally lose faith in humanity and partially lose faith in getting what you pay for.

Let me tell you.. First of all the agency recruiting the cleaners tried to pay us piece rates. According to fair wok website piece rates don't apply to cleaning services, they apply e.g. in agriculture where it is legal to pay per bucket. For cleaning services, normal hourly salary applies. This was the first reason to resign during the first week. I'm done being treated in an unfair manner. In addition I should have signed a 6-months contract with the agency. Had I left earlier they'd made me pay for the training expenses. Once again, illegal.

Reason number two was bad equipment. How come the employer doesn't even provide disposable rubber gloves for the employees to wear? How expensive can the gloves be? When I studied the rights and obligations of the employee and employer for my next job, they clearly stated that the employer should provide a safe working environment and all the necessary equipment needed to perform the job. Well, I don't feel safe cleaning shitty toilets and showers without gloves.

Reason number three is that even in a luxury hotel your towel's been used to clean the toilet and shower room floors and walls. Of course the towel is washed afterwards but I still find it disgusting to think that after a shower I'll wrap around myself something that has been used for cleaning purposes. It's like wearing a dirty mop. From now on I will travel with my own towel.

And the reason number four, my favorite one. The cleaning job was exactly the kind of corporation full-of-shit job I've made a promise to try to avoid. Every morning we had to go trough the ”morning shaming”, to listen the manager tell us every detail that had gone wrong the previous day, every complaint the hotel had received regarding cleaning. When I listened the annoyed manager whine about the bad quality of cleaning, I decided to run as fast as I can. It's better for the manager to take the vacuum cleaner to his own hands and start cleaning himself. After all, it is common knowledge that if you want something properly done, you should do it yourself.

Hotellien siivouksesta

The Argentinian mafia will take care of it

Did your computer get looted overnight? Did other important belongings go missing at the same time? No worries, the Argentinian mafia will take care of it. Offering reliable and fast crime investigation, naturally tailored to fit the customer's needs. Like I told in my previous post, a thief came over in Sunday night. Some girl living in the hostel had opened the door to the guy who lied to her that he had forgotten his key in the room.

When I came home from my shopping tour in the morning, the Argentinians in our hostel and all their numerous friends from outside had sat together and started to solve the mystery. The thief was captured on the surveillance camera and that's how all began. During the day the Argentinian mafia found out that the guy had lived in our hostel but the manager kicked him out after he was found guilty of drawing a graffiti on a wall. Argentinian people seem to be the most social on the Earth and soon the thief's name and identity was found through someone's facebook account. After that a letter addressed to him was found at the reception. The letter contained the motive for the crime, money. The fellow had received a fine for driving without a valid licence.

The thief had a colleague whose identity was established before dusk. Then there was some discussion about what to do and how to get the stolen goods back. Our guys were planning to send a blackmail letter to the thief, something like ”We know you took our kettle from the kitchen yesterday night 3 am. Bring it back to this and this place or we will go to the police.” In the end a message was sent to him, telling him that his secret was out and he'd better hand over the ill-begotten goods ASAP.

Unfortunately I had to go to sleep in the middle of this all too interesting crime drama but in the morning I learned that the thief had met our mafia t Kings Cross station and given back passports and other stuff he had taken. According to his own story he did not mean to take anything, the stuff kind of left with him without him noticing a thing. For sure he has some problems with too sticky fingers.

Once again I have a reason to wonder the mentality of the Argentinian people. I have never ever in my life met as resourceful people. While it might be true that getting to know Argentina has also brought me some sadness and anger, I must say the life here would be a lot less colorful without our South American travel companions.

Argentiinan mafia hoitaa

Lipastettiinko kompuutterisi yön aikana? Katosiko muutakin irtaimistoa?

News

Hello everybody. I haven't been writing anything because I'm still suffering from the longest eye flu in human history. On Tuesday I will go to the eye hospital the umpteenth time to show them my shit eye and they'll probably tell me again that it's a virus and it will take another 2-3 weeks to get better. Soon I'll have the first anniversary with the virus. I have already assumed a permanently disabled person's identity. The doctors know me by name and looks and the last time I went to the hospital the doctor asked me if I like the place because I go there so often. Oh yes, I love it. I love to have my eye lid turned inside out, love to have the eye poked with sticks and rods, measured with all kind of nasty equipment and finally, enjoy having a stinging substance that feels like it has the corrosive side effect of sodium hydroxide poured into the eye.

This weekend I mean to be productive and finally book my flight to Vietnam. Hostel life has had another downturn cause we just got the shittiest roommates ever. Seriously, I have been travelling almost a year now and only had real asshole of a roommates once. This couple is like living with god damn rabbits. They do all the time what rabbits a re famous for, not giving a flying fuck (ha hah ha) about who is in the room. You would assume that grown up people have some sense of what is appropriate in what situation but these people are unfortunately completely retarded and don't get many other things either. It's a disgusting feeling to come home from the grocery store and notice that the room has been transformed into a second rate porn movie scene and you walk in on it. Where is all the respect towards other people, huh? No wonder my eye doesn't get better, seeing traumatizing things like that. White trash, hey!

Finally, we have entered the great lent before Easter. Actually, it started some time ago. The idea is to stop eating meat, dairy, eggs, etc (fish is accepted), candy, chips etc. All in all, the idea is to lead a bit more humble life. I did my first fasting 3 years ago because I wanted to connect with my roots. My great-grandparents fasted every year. I liked the idea because in today's world people consume too much meat and dairy. Blood pressure rises, blood vessels are stuffed with fat and the heart is doing poorly. The first year I fasted I felt the difference in my body very sharply. I felt more energized, in a way more ”bright”. This year the change is not so dramatic because I've been a part-time vegetarian for months now. I only have to skip my evening yogurt (and candy). I keep forgetting I am supposed to fat now but luckily no lapses have happened yet.

OK; that's all. Sorry for possible spelling mistakes, as I said, the eye is not doing good Working on computer is difficult. Let's get back to the business if the eye ever gets better.

Coogee to Bondi Walk

I feel lazy today, so this is going to be a photo post. I walked from Coogee Beach to Bondi Beach via this morning, enjoy the view with me. Actually, I wasn't really in the mood for an outdoors  adventure but decided to go ahead anyway. I was feeling cranky and irritable until I reached the cemetery. That's when I felt my spirits lift. The coastal walkway is really beautiful indeed, there's no denying that but in my recent shitty mood it's difficult to enjoy anything. But that's enough of spoiling your Sunday with my mood swings, let's just upload the pictures and move on.
Coogee Beach
The walk is about 6 kilometers, and today was quite warm. At some point I started to doubt my sanity. Why didn't I wait for the fall and cooler weather? Don't know. No sunburns, though.

Probably this is Gordon Bay

Hiljainen, rauhallinen hautausmaa lepuuttaa hermoja

The year of the rooster

Happy Chinese New year, everyone! Today we welcome the year of the rooster. Chinese, or the lunar new year, is an event that has gained popularity in the west, too. Sydney allegedly has the biggest lunar new year celebrations outside of Asia but that might just a marketing trick :) Lunar new year will be celebrated for about two weeks, so there will be a lot to see and do. Yesterday we went to see the fireworks near Opera House. There are zodiac animal lanterns in the harbor and the Opera House and some other Sydney landmark building shine red in the night. Red is traditionally the color of the lunar new year as it is associated with good luck.
The red Opera House and fireworks
I wanted to write about the beliefs connected to the Chinese zodiac. Are you familiar with the Chinese zodiac? Whereas western time is linear, the Chinese time occurs in 12 year cycles, each year having its own zodiac animal. The animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig. Some of the animals might vary in different countries. (Like in Vietnam, the rabbit has been replaced by the cat.) BTW, there is a reason for the order of the animals to be like it is, you can read it here. It is a lovely story
The lucky dragon
Anna's zodiac sign is the ox
Whereas the western horoscope doesn't really differentiate between more wanted and less wanted signs, the Chinese zodiac has preferred signs and less preferred signs. Dragon is usually seen as the most auspicious sign of them all. A child born in the year of the dragon will be a happy and successful person. Last January, my friend told me she is pregnant. ”Now is the year of the monkey. In Vietnam, people try to avoid having a baby in the year of the monkey. These children are thought to have a difficult life or to be difficult to raise”, she said. Same goes for tiger, snake and pig. Especially being a woman born in the year of the less appreciated signs is difficult. They have worse marriage prospects than women with more auspicious signs and they are less likely to receive a warm welcome from their in-laws. Actually, in Japan, it was traditionally believed that a woman born in the year of the horse brings bad luck to her husband. Not much appreciation is shown towards the year of the sheep (or goat), the people carrying this sign are also seen as, well, sheepish and meek, and thus not very successful.

The interactive wall of fortune
As I mentioned, there are twelve zodiac animals, so every twelve years we are all back to the year of the animal of our birth year. Now, it would be easy to assume that the own year would be especially lucky, but never assume anything when it comes to Chinese philosophy or astrology. During your own year shitty luck is your constant companion and you can expect to encounter every possible misery starting with divorce and ending with a skull fracture.

Superstition? Don't believe in the zodiac system? Could be it's all bullshit but it is powerful bullshit. These days when family planning is more widely available, couples who believe in the system are more likely to have a baby in the year of an animal that fits in the family. They want the family to have well matching signs. In the countries where the zodiac system is believed in, birth rates tend to peak in the year of the dragon and fall in the year of less wanted zodiac signs. (That depend on the country as countries that have adopted the Chinese system also have their own beliefs about the general luckiness of the signs). Now, it seems that the year of the dragon, for example, doesn't bring much good luck anymore. See, there are more kids to share the same limited resources. Class sizes are bigger, there are eventually more people who compete for entrance to universities and apply for the same jobs. So, good bye lucky dragon. After all, it might be easier to be born in the year of the monkey. I also think that the Chinese horoscope might not apply to western people. I was born in the year of the dragon but I'm still waiting for the luck to strike me.

Kukon vuosi

Hauskaa kiinalaista uutta vuotta!

Juhlan kunniaksi osa maamerkkirakennuksista, kuten oopperatalo, on valaistu punaisella. Punainen on kiinalaisen uuden vuoden väri, koska se liittyy hyvään onneen.

Punainen Oopperatalo ja ilotulitukset
Onko kiinalainen kalenteri tuttu? Halusin kirjoittaa uskomuksista, jotka usein liitetään kiinalaisen horoskoopin eläinhahmoihin. Läntinen aika on lineaarista, mutta itäinen aika on syklistä. Esimerkiksi Vietnamissa jäniksen tilalla on kissa.

Lohikäärme on kaikkein onnekkain merkki.

Christmas is coming

This week was very busy at work, I didn't even have time to write a blog post. In the morning I went to work, stayed there for ten hours, came back, ate dinner, slept and the next morning repeated the exercise. So if it so happened that you missed me at least a bit, here's the explanation why there wasn't a post earlier.

My head is still too tired to try to produce a post with something clever to say but I wanted to write something. This week I realized that I'm just complaining about Australia all the time, and all I do is whine about my miserable life. The past weeks I have been stressed for countless reasons, I've been crying so much that my roommates probably think I'm a lunatic who should be sent to asylum. My co-workers think I'm not quite right in the head, because sometimes I cry at work too, when the sheets don't go neatly in the ironing machine.

Our Christmas tree
However today when I went to buy a new lunchbox in Smart Dollar store I saw a bag that proclaimed "I love Australia more than ever" and understood that yes, it's true. I am exactly where I want to be, where I have to be and where I need to be. I'm happy I came here and stayed despite the problematic beginning. I have a lovely family here and the best job ever. Even the weather is good most of the time.

And then about Christmas. I have never liked Christmas much, I don't like how people get all fussy and stressed trying to organize the best Christmas ever and then complain how they have to work so hard for the holidays and how tiring it is. Come on, the feeling of have to is inside the head. No law states that everyone must prepare for the festive season from the beginning of November. And I don't like the commercial Christmas. What's the point of buying lots of things no one actually needs? It's difficult to be on good mood when the world is drowning in plastic and gift wrapping paper. The best thing about Christmas is spending time with the loved ones but my family is too far and it makes me sad. Luckily I have my Anna here and now I'll have a two weeks holiday during which time I will use as much money as I want to and do all the tourist things I thought I wouldn't have the opportunity to do. I wanna go to Hard Rock Cafe, Sydney Tower and maybe even book a wine tasting tour.

Merry Christmas, be happy and love the people around you!

Joulu tulee

Listalla on mm.

About solidarity

I want to write about something that made my blood boil with anger last weekend. We had a fire alarm in the night. It happens quite often on this street that an alarm of some kind goes off, the noise is something you easily get used to, so at this point it'll take an airstrike to wake us up. That's why our room was one of the last rooms to evacuate on that night. I shouted ”fire alarm, wake up” until the even sleepier roommates of ours woke up and left the room.

But apparently that's not the done thing. Anna heard this horror story in the morning when she was eating breakfast at the same time with a German guy who wondered what fire alarm Anna was talking about. The guy didn't wake up even though the siren kept wailing at least fifteen minutes and his roommates were quick enough to evacuate themselves an leave him to face his faith in a house that could have been on fire. Luckily the house wasn't on fire but the alarm was caused by the foam extinguisher some drunk asses emptied in the corridor. Everyone of us has their own sense of humor, we can't help that.

The guy left behind, sleeping in his bed gets on my nerves because that kind of behavior is unacceptable. We are all pretty much alone here, travelling far away from those who love us and care if we are alive or dead. Would it be too much to ask to ask people to care for each other a bit? Maybe the world would be a bit better place if we thought about other people, too, not just ourselves. At least in an emergency, please!

Solidaarisuudesta

Home is where the heart is

How do strangers become a part of your family? That's easy, just live with the same people for some time and you'll start to think they are your family. That's what happens when you live in a hostel and it actually happens quite easily. At first we were six persons in the same room, then we got two extra beds for the high season. Every time those extra people arrive we wonder if they'll live with us or if they'll just visit us. Every time they leave we are happy to be six again. I mean, you gotta be friendly and welcoming but sometimes it's nice to be with your own family, and only with them.

Maybe we've made ourselves too comfortable living here. It was this week when I found myself considering living here permanently, working in the ironing shop until I retire and then moving to a Finnish retirement home in Brisbane. Sounds like a plan. We can't really move away anyway because we've accumulated too much stuff. My locker is full of take away plastic cups, free old books from the local library and other salvaged pieces of crap other people threw away. Too troublesome man, to try to find another room.

Sculptures by the sea
Besides the roommates are nice. We support each other. One of these morning my roommate didn't have bread so I gave him some of mine. The next morning I didn't have salt so he gave me some of his. This is communism that works. If you have a hammer, better know someone who has nails.

Honestly, when we first moved here we didn't like the hostel and hated the area. Living in the entertainment distict didn't do it for us. But then we got used to it. Started to think it's OK to live in the red light district. Then we started to think it's cool, we like it. Now we don't want to move away anymore. Maybe we are not quite right in the head anymore, wanting to share the room with seven other people, accepting non-functioning kitchen, bedbugs and all.

Koti on siellä missä sydän on - Ryysyranta story

Taidetta meren rannalla
Lisäksi ihmiset on täällä mukavia. Me tuetaan toisiamme.

A woman in the world of men

That's the conclusion after serious discussions with Anna. Too many men everywhere. In the last post I introduced you the life of an immigrant woman, so now it's time to explore the fascinating world of immigrant men. This is an outsider's opinion, of course.

There are more men here in the hostel than there are women. It has something to do with the guys' inability to find shared rooms. (Says the woman who hasn't even started looking for one yet. It could be that I am a man after all myself). Sometimes the kitchen feels more like a military base than a kitchen. When I came home from work I noticed with a sinking feeling that the amount of men in our room had doubled. We are 50:50 now. Before we have always had more girls. Makes me hope the guys are only visiting us, not staying forever.

Well, then the life of immigrant men. As I said before, immigrant women perform the low paid, unskilled jobs always smiling and being happy. In the same situation the men sit in the kitchen sour as hell, complaining about having too much work, too little money and the boss in an a-hole. In addition, the conversations always include the usual topics, like soccer, drinking beer and amusing women. In the night they can't sleep because there's always this party or that party to attend and in the morning life appears quite grey and uninteresting again. In one expression, it sucks. And these guys don't even have their gender against them like women do. Plus there's sexism everywhere. If the ladies are watching telly and there's even one guy with us, another guy wanting to change the channel will invariably consult the other man. Who cares about what the ladies want. The closest man to them can speak for them any time.

If you cannot have a man-free zone at home, you are not much better off in the public places either. One of these days I was in the library, quietly minding my own business, when a 40+ guy suddenly asked me out. He tried to pick me up from the library for God's sake! He asked all the usual questions, like where I am from , what I'm doing here etc. Spoke to me in Finnish as that must be the fastest way to score. I tried to be as vague as I could, told him my friend assumes I will be going to our home with her, so I cannot go out today. He was persistent and suggested drinks later this week. Now I saw it fit to create an imaginary, extremely jealous Russian lover called Andrey, who doesn't really like to share me with other men, for the obvious reasons. I thought the new dude would leave me alone after this but no, he wanted to know if I met Andrey in Tinder. I told no, I went out and there was Andrey waiting for me. Who on Earth needs tinder anyway when you can't even feel safe in the library. I'm tired of the other gender, except for Andrey, he is a dear. Never wants me to do things I don't want to do.
